The goal of orthopedic massage is to restore structural balance in various muscle groups all through the body. This is a specialized form of manual therapy that incorporates techniques from multiple therapeutic modalities including deep tissue, myofascial release, trigger point, and muscle energy techniques.
Muscle groups in the body may shorten due to poor posture, sleeping habits, repetitive motion, and many other activities encountered in daily life. A shortened muscle group may entrap nerves, constrict blood vessels, and restrict movement of joints. Many times a person will not experience pain within the shortened group of muscles, but instead in the opposing group of muscles that has become overstretched and weak, as well as within the joint or joints these muscles surround.
Orthopedic massage addresses the shortened muscles FIRST, lengthening them back to their normal positions, and then focuses on the opposing, overstretched muscles to release trigger points and restore normal range of motion.
This type of massage is great for breaking up adhesions within the muscle, stabilizing the position of soft tissue, lengthening connective tissue, releasing entrapment of nerves, and restoring normal blood flow to the affected areas. It is also used to address injuries including, but not limited to, whiplash, ankle sprains, shin splints, and carpel tunnel syndrome.
