Deep Tissue

Deep Tissue Massage is aimed at the deeper tissue structures of the muscles and fascia (connective tissue surrounding the muscles for structural support and protection). Many of the same strokes used in Swedish Massage are employed, but the pressure will be more intense and the massage itself will be more focused, concentrating on specific areas rather than a general massage for the whole body.

Chronic muscle tension that has built up over a period of time greatly restricts blood flow to the muscles. This blocks the oxygen and nutrients the muscles need to function properly, leading to a build-up of toxins and inflammation of the muscles. Deep tissue work helps interrupt the chronic patterns of tension in the body through slow strokes and deep finger pressure on the affected areas. Once these stress patterns are released, the toxins are flushed out, the muscle tissue loosens, and blood flow is restored to a more normal level. Deep tissue massage also aids in breaking up, and even eliminating, scar tissue.

Because the pressure used in this type of bodywork is more intense and the massage itself is highly focused on specific areas of tension, a deep tissue massage is likely to be a bit more uncomfortable than a Swedish massage. It should not, however, cause pain. The person receiving the massage needs to communicate with the therapist to ensure the proper pressure is used during the session.
